Trenton?s City Council may take the first step toward ousting the city?s police director due to his home address.

Some council members want to know why Director Joe Santiago lives almost 50 miles away from Trenton and won?t move to the city he protects. A city ordinance says the police director has to live in Trenton, but Mayor Doug Palmer gave Santiago a waiver from that rule.

Councilman Jim Coston argues the mayor?s waiver was invalid and says it?s time for Santiago to start house hunting in Trenton. Coston says Santiago is doing a good job in many areas, but feels the city can?t give preferential treatment.

Palmer says he stands by the waiver he gave to Santiago. He adds that losing Santiago now means risking public safety.

The council will vote on a resolution that gives Santiago two weeks to tell them if he?s going to make an effort to move to the city. If Santiago won?t move, Coston says there are legal options.
