One of the last flights from South Africa will be landing in Newark Sunday before travel is suspended from the country due to the new COVID-19 variant.

A direct flight from Johannesburg is scheduled to arrive at Newark Liberty International Airport just before 7 a.m. The suspension doesn't start until Monday and doesn't apply to U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

The ban includes travelers from Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique and Malawi.

News 12 is told passengers on that flight will not be required to quarantine.

Experts say the coronavirus variant omicron is highly transmissible, however, not much is known about it yet.
