Forty-four cats, five dogs and two rabbits were discovered in a Toms River home described by animal rescuers as a ?complete horror.?
SPCA officials believe the house spiraled out of control as the residents tried to get animals off the street.
?I think it started out with good intentions, thinking they were saving the animals ? then it got out of control,? says SPCA police chief Buddy Amato.
The animals were rescued by a volunteer group called Tails With Happy Endings. None of the cats were spayed or neutered and were reproducing. The animals were reproducing in the home and at least two are now pregnant.
Rescuers say the house was uninhabitable.
?Feces on the wall, on the floors, just really nowhere for the cats to go,? says Barbara Egan, a member of Tails With Happy Endings.
The rescue group has not disclosed the address or names of the couple accused of animal hoarding. More than half of the animals have been removed from the premises and are being placed in foster homes until something more permanent can be found.
