Commuters are often forced to choose between saving time or saving money when traveling into New York City.
News 12 New Jersey reporters Amanda Eustice and Tom Krosnowski tested that choice with a morning commute from Bergen County into Manhattan.
Tom took a bus from Glen Rock to the Port Authority Bus Terminal while Amanda took the train to Penn Station, with a transfer in Secaucus.
Glen Rock Borough Hall was used as the starting point because the train tracks and bus stop are located close together.
The bus was scheduled to depart at 7:09 a.m. and arrive in Midtown at 7:50 a.m.
The bus arrived at 7:12 a.m., three minutes behind schedule. Early stops along the route allowed riders to find seats before the bus filled up.
After several local stops, the bus entered the highway with traffic increasing near the Helix and through the Lincoln Tunnel.
The bus arrived at the Port Authority at about 7:58 a.m., roughly 10 minutes later than scheduled.
An extra 10 minutes during rush hour is not unusual, but timing matters when comparing commute options.
