? Newark police arrested a third person Friday in connection with the schoolyard murders of three college students, according to an Essex County Prosecutor?s Office spokesperson.
Mayor Cory Booker described the latest suspect as a 15-year-old African American.
Jose Carranza, 28, and another 15-year-old male have already been arrested in the execution-style murders. Carranza pleaded not guilty in court Friday morning.
Carranza faces 11 counts, including murder, attempted murder, robbery and weapons charges. Carranza, appearing in an orange jumpsuit and shackles, also revealed he is in the United States illegally.
The suspect had been out on bail for a child sex case and an assault case. His immigration status apparently never came up at those earlier hearings.
Essex County Prosecutor Paula Dow said Carranza won?t be deported until his trial for the Newark slayings is over and he serves his sentence, if found guilty.
?We have him and he?s ours,? Dow said.
Carranza, 28, is being held on $1 million bail and is in protective custody.
The 15-year-old who was also arrested in connection with the case is being held at a juvenile detention facility. Prosecutors, who want to try the teen as an adult, have not filed any motions in relation to him yet. However, they have 30 days to do so.
A vigil for the victims was held Friday night. Funerals are scheduled for Saturday.
