A new survey by the New Jersey Theatre Alliance surveyed theatergoers about whether they would return when the doors open.
The group says more than half responded that they wouldn’t come back without widespread vaccinations.
“Over 50% of theatergoers surveyed will not feel comfortable going back until there was a vaccine and until they themselves are vaccinated,” says John McEwen, of the New Jersey Theatre Alliance.
Laura Ekstrand, artistic director of the Dreamcatcher Repertory Theatre, says the nonprofit theater decided to do only virtual programming until at least the summer.
“In terms of the traditional going back to the theater, it will be September at the absolute earliest,” says Ekstrand.
Theaters across New Jersey have been shuttered for 10 months due to the pandemic.
The New Jersey Theatre Alliance represents more than 40 theaters in New Jersey.
