With the demand for emergency medical services is on the rise, one local volunteer ambulance corps is using some star power to help raise awareness.
Emmy Award-winning actor Joe Pantoliano appeared in a newly released video praising the quick response of The Wilton Volunteer Ambulance Corps when he was struck by a car in town while on a walk with family back in 2020.
"You guys were terrific," 'The Sopranos' star says in the video. "I didn't know it was all volunteer. You're the only game in town - who else are you going to call? Ghostbusters?"
The Wilton Volunteer Ambulance Corps was founded 50 years ago and is currently comprised of around 60 volunteers.
Most of the EMTs are full-time college students and regular people with other full-time jobs.
"Most of the people in Wilton are unaware that we're mainly self-funded," WVAC treasurer Betsy Wallon says. "The people from the community are the ones responding to those 911 calls."
With a lot of assisted living facilities in town and new apartments going in, Wallon expects WVAC to respond to over 2,000 calls for service this year, which would be an all-time record.
She's hoping the video will help increase much-needed donations.
"They're doing this out of the goodness of their heart," Wallon says. "We just want to bring awareness to the people of Wilton that we're here and we're doing this."
