At 97 years old, United States Marine and World War II veteran Leo Rosenzweig, known as “Uncle Leo” to friends and family, never expected a traveling chef turn his kitchen into a five-star restaurant. Thanks to a partnership between the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office and Chefs for Seniors, the surprise visit will provide the veteran with meals for the next two weeks. “It’s a good idea. This is something I found out about that you can hire a chef and have him cook for you,” said “Uncle” Leo Rosenzweig. The Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office chose Uncle Leo as this month’s veteran recipient, a small token of thanks for the 97-year old’s sacrifice and service. He loves the idea and not just for him or other seniors. The standard rate is about $12 per meal. “They’ll make four selections off our menu. We’ll turn their four selections into approximately 12 to 14 complete meals, most importantly cooked to any dietary restrictions that may be involved,” said Chef James Rosciano, of Chefs for Seniors. Chef Rosciano prepared Uncle Leo two weeks’ worth of pasta fagioli, roast pork and stir fry. “Many of the seniors we visit are homebound. They aren’t as mobile anymore, so they look forward to the social aspect of it,” said Risciano.
