Rev. T. Wendell Foster Park received $4 million in allocated funding on Thursday.

Bronx Brough President Vanessa L. Gibson and Councilmember Althea Stevens presented the check to the city's Department of Parks and Recreation.

The skate park became a staple for the community back in 1988. The project aims to preserve its historical roots while enhancing its infrastructure with a modern twist.

"This is one of the first skate parks in the nation that we had here and understanding that history and making sure that it was a jewel and that we needed to make sure that we were investing in it and understanding how do we also make sure it's for our community and our young people for them to feel safe and have a place to go and explore new activities," said Stevens.

"It has been a vibrant hub for skateboarders, for rollerblades, for our children, our families, for BMX riders, for the entire community here in the Bronx. But beyond," said Gibson.

For skaters like Ray Mendez, it holds sentimental value.

"If it weren't for this place, many of us wouldn't have had careers, and some of us probably wouldn't still be here. I know I, by this place and being part of the community that it's fostered, saved my life," said Mendez.

The park is expected to be fully renovated by 2026.
