A Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band benefit concert raised about $3 million Wednesday for the restoration of the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank.
Funds will be put towards redoing the theatre's plaster and painting. Currently a net has been put under the ceiling to prevent the audience from getting pelted with falling pieces of debris.
Starting in July, the theatre will be closed for four months for reconstruction.
Springsteen and his crew were implored to take part in the benefit by Patti Scialfa, Springsteen's wife. Scialfa, herself an E Street member and Deal native, is on the Basie Foundation's board of executives.
This year's renovation is only the first round of work to be done. An additional $9 million must be raised to complete all the work and update the sound system.
The theatre may be planning more big name benefit concerts down the road to continue fundraising.
