Time is ticking to help a Hunterdon County teen collect as many shoes as he can.
Whitehouse's Griffin Dunn has been stepping up to help communities around the globe. He collects pairs of shoes that then get sent to the nonprofit group Soles4Souls.
"A truck will come here once this bin gets full," said Dunn. "It takes maybe two hours just loading up the truck with as many shoes as you can and then it gets sent down to Nashville."
Dunn has collected over 13,000 pairs to date. The teen says his last collection will end on Nov. 1 and he is looking for someone to take over the effort.
"It's almost like passing the torch to someone. It's kind of hard to find someone to do this, and it's not pretty, but it definitely helps and I think that really anyone can do it," said Dunn.
People as far as Haiti have been on the receiving end of his contributions. Dunn says it is not possible without in-person collections, shoe drives, and the bins set up at Raritan Valley Community College.
"Raritan Valley Community College has a bin there and they've agreed to kind of help out in that way - by having a bin on campus as a spot to donate shoes," said Dunn. "I mean, we've gotten most of our shoes from there."
The bin collection will also end by Nov. 1.
Soles4Souls' overall mission is to reduce waste in the U.S., while helping low-income countries develop small businesses through donations.
About $108,000 in economic growth has been helped by Soles4Souls, according to Dunn.
