Teachers at South Plainfield High School are boycotting the graduation ceremony after students who allegedly attended prom drunk were told they can attend.
According to the teachers' union, faculty members who usually chaperone the graduation ceremony elected not to attend after the Board of Education overturned the punishment for students who reportedly arrived at the prom intoxicated. The students were apparently told they could not attend graduation after they signed a mandatory no-drinking pledge and then allegedly drank before prom.
Residents say the BOE overturned the district's decision due to legal pressure from some parents. Some teachers say allowing the students to go unpunished sets a bad example for future seniors.
