The contaminated soil has been removed from outside a Paramus school, but the issue is far from over.
Mayor James Tedesco ordered West Brook Middle School closed until further notice on Wednesday while tainted soil was removed. According to Tedesco, the soil was removed and taken to a licensed hazardous waste landfill. He also said soil testing is complete and samples will be analyzed with the NJDEP.
Interior air and swipe testing is expected to be complete Friday afternoon. Tedesco said students would begin attending classes at Bergen Community College Monday. He said the rest of the school year might be finished at the college, depending on the results of the testing.
In addition to the soil troubles, Tedesco is now facing a legal issue. School Superintendent Dr. Janice Dime is questioning what authority Tedesco had to make the decision to close the school.
Parents are also questioning why the school took so long to notify them of the soil, which was found in December.
