Instead of reviewing for final exams, students at Wayne Valley High School were evacuated Wednesday after suspicious explosive devices were found on the campus.
Authorities say a student alerted the school after he saw what appeared to be a fuse coming out of a locker. Police then evacuated the school after they found 16 incendiary devices in two lockers on the second floor of the building.
?The amount of smoke and the amount of fire coming from a locker would have overtaken the entire top floor of Wayne Valley High School,? Passaic County Sheriff Jerry Speziale said. ?You would have had fire coming out of lockers, you would have students running down hallways. It would have been catastrophic.?
Teachers and students were evacuated to Calvary Temple, which is located across from the school. Students said police had bomb-sniffing dogs at the temple to search students and their belongings.
Two students have been taken in for questioning by police. Meanwhile, bomb-sniffing dogs remain at the school for an investigation.
The district said the school will open Thursday for final exams.
