A rally was held Monday for employees of the Alba Wine and Spirits in Edison.
Those workers were swept up and detained in a raid by federal immigration agents on July 8. In all, 25 workers are still waiting to find out if they'll be freed or further detained.
On Monday, many were expected to hear from a judge who make that decision. Supporters of those workers gathered outside of Delaney Hall in Newark. RELATED:
They are upset, claiming that these 25 employees for Alba Wine and Spirits were racially profiled, rounded up and arrested without due process. What's especially troubling for these families is that these workers for Alba Wine and Spirits have work permits, Social Security and asylum hearings pending. Yet they were still arrested. "To those behind bars you are not forgotten. Our communities are fighting for your release and to end the separation of our families," said Carlos Castaneda, with Cosecha, an organization dedicated to assisting immigrants in New Jersey. Castaneda said to the crowd on hand that "these are families torn apart, kids asking for their parents if they're coming back, wives not knowing what to do what's next." The arrests are part of the immigration raids by Immigration and Custom Enforcement that continue around the country. Their families say the workers don't have any kind of criminal history. Following the raid two weeks ago, Alba Wine and Spirits has said it is cooperating with Homeland Security. However, it said their detained employees are disappointed that Alba Wine has so far, refused to offer any kind of help to foster release.
