Summit police officer killed in crash laid to rest
A Summit Police Department officer who was killed in a multi-vehicle crash last week was laid to rest Monday.
A burial Mass was held for Officer Matthew Tarentino at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Somerville followed by a graveside service at Resurrection Cemetery in Piscataway. Officials advised drivers to expect a heavy police presence in the area and numerous road closures.
Flags across the state were flown at half-staff on Monday in recognition of Tarentino.
The 29-year-old was killed Tuesday morning in a crash on Interstate 78 while driving to work. Tarentino leaves behind two children and a pregnant wife.
The Summit Police Athletic League has set up a donation site for the family. As of Monday morning, the fundraiser had accumulated more than $420,000 of its $500,000 goal.
