Students of a West New York Catholic school walked out of class Friday to protest the diocese's decision to drop the ax on the school.
The Newark Diocese has decided St. Joseph's of the Palisades High School must close because there isn't enough tuition money to keep it running. The school has 187 students, falling short of the 250 quota needed to keep the school open.
Students, parents and teachers say the diocese has made a mistake by not giving them an option to raise the funds necessary to keep St. Joseph's open.
"We have three generations coming through the school, I'm sure we can do it ? we just need more time," says teacher Hilda Santos.
Diocese spokesman Jim Goodness says the school's time has simply run out.
"I know the school made efforts to recruit, yes to fund raise, yes, certainly it's worthy to do it, but it hasn't been proving to be beneficial right now," says Goodness.
