Students feel ‘tricked’ as Maplewood school nixes Halloween celebrations
A school in Maplewood will not have any in-school Halloween activities this year due to a diverse population of students, leaving many kids who want to show off their costumes and have fun feeling 'tricked.'
The Seth Boyden Elementary School principal and the PTA made the decision last week.
They say about 120 students did not participate in the activities last year, while other parents opted to keep their children home on that day.
A school district spokeswoman says the policy doesn't extend to other schools in the district or to other holidays at Seth Boyden elementary.
The superintendent says he respects the decision.
The parents that spoke with News 12 on and off camera say it's really not that important and education, not more sugar, needs to come first.
Halloween celebrations were also canceled last year at Seth Boyden Elementary School, but the decision was reversed.
