Barbershops and hair salons have been closed for three months due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and many New Jerseyans say that they are desperate to get their hair cut.
But some health experts say that just because the establishments are open doesn’t mean customers should rush right out to get a haircut.
Rutgers Environmental and Biological Sciences Professor Donald Schaffner says that customers should take a “wait and see” approach to make sure the establishments are following the proper safety protocols. He says that state requirements such as PPE and social distancing will reduce the risk of coronavirus.
“I’m going to wait and see a week or two and see what the case levels do and see if those cases are linked to those kinds of operations,” Schaffner says. “I think people also have to consider their own health situation. Are you immune-compromised? Do you have heart disease, lung disease? We know the risk factors to make COVID-19 much worse.”
Schaffner also recommends stopping by the hair salon in advance to make sure they are following the rules to the customer’s standards. He says that requiring appointments will help limit the number of customers inside at once.
