The mayor of Elizabeth says that at least 12 people have died from COVID-19-related complications at a city nursing home.
The Elizabeth Nursing and Rehabilitation Center is located on Grove Street. Mayor Chris Bollwage says that since March 22 there have been 22 deaths at the facility. He says that 12 of those deaths were COVID-19-related.
Bollwage says that 16 other patients have tested positive for the virus, but are still alive. The age range for the people who died was not immediately available. It also wasn’t clear what the other 10 people died from.
The mayor says that at least eight staff members have also come down with the illness.
“This is truly heartbreaking for the families and my thoughts and prayers go out to them during this difficult time,” Bollwage said in a statement.
The facility is open as of Tuesday night, but Bollwage says that they are not taking any new admissions.
The mayor’s office says that there are still 58 other patients being cared for inside the facility. It is licensed for 102 beds. The state does licensing for these types of facilities.
State health officials say that long-term health care facilities have been hard-hit by the virus. The elderly and those who are immunocompromised are particularly susceptible to complications.
A nursing home in Woodbridge evacuated its residents after several people came down with the virus.
