Rutgers students on edge after 2 coyote attacks on campus
Students on Rutgers University’s Livingston Campus in New Brunswick say that they will be extra cautious after two people were attacked by coyotes in five days.
The attacks happened near the Rutgers Preserve. The first incident took place last Thursday at Hospital Road and Avenue E by a wooded section of the walkway leading to campus. That person was attacked around 4 a.m., according to police.
The next attack happened Monday evening around 7:30 p.m. Rutgers police saying, "The victim, who is affiliated [with Rutgers], indicated that he was walking on Road 3 in the area of Suttons Lane when the coyote approached him from the rear and bit his left pant leg."
Senior Aaron Kerzner says that he regularly walks the stretch where the attack happened.
"And I guess I was like a little worried but it's a big campus,” he says. "It can't get me. It's gonna bite someone else."
Students have received emails from university officials informing them of the coyotes and assuring them that there will be more police patrols near the preserve.
“I'll keep walking here but I'm more cautious,” says senior April Lopez. “I take off one of my earphones to hear whatever is going on around me."
Rutgers police say that they will provide escort for any student or staff member who is afraid to walk alone.
"I definitely am requesting getting out of class early, that way I don't have to pass this during that crossover 4:30 p.m., 5 p.m. when it starts to get dark,” says senior Emmani Riddick.
Police say that they have located a coyote den in the area.
