Gov. Phil Murphy is currently overseas in India – the first sitting New Jersey governor to lead a business trip there.

The governor will visit about six cities during the weeklong trip, hoping to entice Indian companies to conduct business in New Jersey.

Indian Americans who live in the Garden State says that Murphy’s trip has a special meaning for them.

Bobby Bansal is a second-generation jeweler. His family migrated to the United States from India about 25 years ago. Raj Jewelers, the shop he owns, is located in Iselin - a neighborhood which many consider the heart of New Jersey's Indian American community.

“The opportunities that are given to South Asians in the state of New Jersey, we all want to live here,” Bansal says.

New Jersey has the nation’s third-largest Indian American populations. Longtime activist and businessperson Peter Kothari says that Murphy’s trip is a sign of the growing acceptance and contributions of the state's Indian Americans.

Murphy’s trip will also to help promote educational and cultural ties between India and New Jersey.
