A person was killed early Monday morning during an incident involving officers from the Lacey Township Police Department, officials confirmed.

According to Chief Paul J. Sullivan Jr., the police encounter occurred at about 2 a.m. in the area of Hemlock Drive, in the Lanoka Harbor section of the municipality.

"This encounter resulted in one individual sustaining a fatal injury," Sullivan told News 12 in a statement.

During the incident, one Lacey Township police officer suffered a non-life-threatening injury and was transported to a hospital for treatment. The chief said there were multiple police officers on scene; however, none of them were injured during the encounter.

According to the Attorney General's Office of Public Integrity and Accountability, officers arrived in response to a 911 call about a medical event. During an encounter with the caller outside the home around 2:44 a.m., one officer shot the woman, officials said. She was later pronounced dead.

According to the Attorney General's office, a knife was found at the scene.

The woman's identity is not being released at this time.
