A teenager from Medford is suing the makers of Juul electronic cigarettes in federal court, claiming their social media marketing of the device led to his nicotine addiction, hospitalization and serious health problems.
According to the federal lawsuit, the 18-year-old says he began using Juul e-cigarettes back in early 2017 while he was a junior in high school.
The lawsuit says in the past 18 months, he’s suffered behavioral and cognitive problems, as well as declining academic status.
He was also hospitalized for three days in August, where he battled fever, nausea, and severe vomiting -- all symptoms tied to high levels of nicotine.
This exposure leads to lifelong risks for heart disease, stroke, and cancer.
Documents claim the company was only concerned with sales and marketing to teenagers, rather than safety and health warnings.
There is no word if Juul has responded to the lawsuit.
