Severe storms swept across parts of New Jersey Saturday, packing gusty winds, hail, lightning and downpours and spawning at least one brief tornado.

The National Weather Service confirms that a landspout tornado touched down Saturday afternoon in Mount Laurel, located in Burlington County. It said the tornado had estimated peak winds of 70 mph and a path length of 0.07 miles.

The National Weather Service says the tornado moved across a parking lot, overturning a car, then caused damage to a building and tore two air conditioning units off of its roof. It says no injuries or fatalities were reported.

The Mount Laurel Fire Department posted video on its Facebook page that appeared to show a funnel cloud.

News 12 Meteorologist Michele Powers says it was a landspout tornado -- meaning it formed while the thunderstorm cloud was still growing and the spinning originated near the ground.

 

The National Weather Service had issued a tornado warnings and severe thunderstorm warnings for multiple parts of the state throughout the day Saturday.

 Flash flood warnings and flood advisories were also issued due to heavy downpours associated with the storms.
