A Brooklyn-based online furniture retailer has been ordered to pay $350,000 in restitution to nearly 300 customers nationwide, following an investigation by the New York Attorney General's office.

Payless Furniture Inc., which operates under the name 1StopBedrooms, faced hundreds of complaints from customers who said they waited months for furniture, were charged unexpected fees, or never received their orders at all. The AG's office filed a lawsuit against the company in January 2025 after also reviewing thousands of complaints through the Better Business Bureau.

Other customers reported receiving damaged or incorrect furniture, while others say they were given the runaround when seeking refunds or delivery updates.

"The whole process was just such a nightmare," said customer Darren Bien. “They misrepresented what they were capable of delivering and when they were capable of delivering it."

In addition to the restitution, the settlement requires 1StopBedrooms, whose headquarters are in Midwood in Brooklyn, to change its advertising and business practices, though it does not spell out the specifics.

An attorney for 1StopBedrooms said: “1StopBedrooms is pleased to have come to an agreement with the New York Attorney General to settle this matter and avoid the expense and hassle of protracted litigation. This settlement resolves consumer complaints which arose during the COVID pandemic when the furniture industry was decimated by supply shortages and interruption. 1StopBedrooms is proud that it emerged from the COVID era as one of America’s Highest Rated Furniture Stores, with state-of-the-art infrastructure to ensure seamless communication, transparency, and an exceptional customer experience."

The AG's office is urging customers who purchased furniture from 1StopBedrooms between Jan. 15, 2019 and Jan. 15, 2025 to come forward. The deadline to submit a claim is August 10.

Affected customers can email 1stopbedroomsclaims@ag.ny.gov.

Eligible customers include those who:

  • Did not receive a delivery date at the time of purchase

  • Were not notified of delivery delays

  • Were charged unwarranted cancellation fees

  • Received defective or incorrect furniture

  • Filed a complaint with the AG’s office or with the Better Business Bureau
