The American Dream complex in the Meadowlands is set to open by spring 2019, according to developer Triple Five.
The massive entertainment and retail complex has been in development for over a decade and has been plagued by financial woes.
Officials say that American Dream will feature an indoor Dreamworks water park, two record-breaking roller coasters at the future Nickelodeon Universe theme park, and dozens of retail stores.
The project stalled in 2006 and Triple Five took over in 2017. The developer is the owner of the Mall of America in Minnesota.
“We are working so hard to get new tenants that people have not seen here before,” says Lincoln Palsgrove, vice president of communications for American Dream.
Project managers say that 68 percent of the retail space is complete. About 1,500 crew members are out making sure the building is complete for the opening.
“Because of the work of Triple Five, county leaders and the men and women of organized labor, it’s a dream finally coming to fruition,” says Gov. Phil Murphy.
Some say that they worry that the 3 million-square-foot complex may cause traffic issues, especially due to its proximity to MetLife Stadium. But the developer says that it expects to help manage crowds through buses from the Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York.
“We’re working on it…it will be a phased-in process…let’s get us open and we’ll work it out,” says Palsgrove.
Triple Five says that 80 percent of the retail spots have been leased out. They say that they expect that retailers will be able to move in and begin building by the end of the year.
