STORM TEAM UPDATE: An incoming weather system could create a wintry mix followed by icy conditions. This could pose hazards on the roadways on Thursday morning. We are still gathering information on this system, stay with News 12 and we'll post new updates as they become available.
Get ready for a series of storms that could have a significant impact on how we get around. The weather pattern is very active right now. A parade of weather will move from the Pacific Northwest, cruise across the country and plow through New Jersey with an overflow of different types of weather, seemingly, all at once.
The first of three happens late Wednesday through the overnight Thursday morning.
Right now, the morning commute on Thursday looks treacherous. At the onset, snow overspreads the area. I'm not expecting much snowfall – 1 to 3 inches in communities along the Delaware River and in northern New Jersey. The atmosphere will begin to warm, and the snow will change to sleet/freezing rain. This will last for a few hours and, unfortunately, take us into the morning drive to work and school.
On top of the snow, a crunch of ice will develop. Pavement that looks wet will in fact be icy. Expect school delays or closings. If you have a work-from-home option, utilize it. Eventually, the ice scenario will taper and a few scattered rain showers will finish the morning up. By afternoon, clouds will be stuck overhead and temperatures will be in the mid- to upper-30s.
The second round of wintry weather is this weekend - Saturday into Sunday morning. This round of weather could be more dangerous than what I am expecting on Thursday morning. Based on the face value of guidance, (that will change), a touch more snow is expected to start then possibly even more ice on top of that. If this plays out like guidance is suggesting, then New Jersey would be looking at a serious weather problem going into Super Bowl Sunday morning. By all accounts, the weather should move on by game time, I just don't know how bad the roads are going to be.
The third system has the possibility to deliver more of a snowy situation than ice or sleet. If – IF - the storm tracks into our storm window, and a lot can and will happen from now until then, it's possible a decent accumulation would be expected from Tuesday night through late Wednesday of next week. Stay tuned.
