TRACKING DEBBY: Looks like an active weather week as we are tracking storms and unsettled weather over the next couple of days. We are tracking Debby and how the storm tracks heading toward this weekend.
While there will not be a direct hit from Debby as a hurricane or tropical storm, there is a growing threat of significant flooding and heavy rain from the storm's remnants toward the weekend.
The forecast will continue to evolve. Exact timing, track and impacts will change this week. The News 12 Storm Watch Team will deliver updates on Debby's impact as they develop.

Storm Watch: Tuesday, Aug. 6 - 7

WHAT: A passing weather front will be responsible for producing numerous areas of rain flooding/flash flooding. Up to 3 or 4 inches of rain is possible with these storms. Frequent lightning is expected due to the nature of these storms. Gusts can be in excess of 30-50 mph if storms go severe.
WHERE: Greatest flooding threat is for central New Jersey along the I-195 corridor and in Hunterdon, Somerset, Middlesex, Mercer, Monmouth, Burlington, and Ocean counties. Flood is expected in other counties, but the threat is higher in the aforementioned zones.
WHEN: Pop-up thunderstorms begin after 3 p.m. on Tuesday evening. Thunderstorms "train" (repeat one after another) in the same area producing very large raindrops at high intensity. Flooding becomes immediate through the evening commute and overnight. Rain gradually tapers into Wednesday morning near sunrise.
UNCERTIANTY: This is happening, we are certain rain is on the way and will create flooding. The heaviest rainfall is expected in Central New Jersey and can impact areas in northern New Jersey. River flooding is not expected to occur immediately, but river levels can rise after the storm leaves on Wednesday. More rain is forecast for later in the week, and this can create an elevated risk for the following rain events.

Forecast

Tuesday will feature brief sun but a mostly cloudy sky. Late day thunderstorms roll through, producing some flooding into Wednesday morning.
Wednesday will be cloudy. Temperatures on Wednesday will be a bit cooler, with highs near 78. Afternoon thunderstorms are likely as well, but the first half of the day should be dry. The weather forecast is subject to change from this point as Thursday - Saturday will feature indirect impacts from Hurricane Debby.
Watch below as Meteorologist Mike Rizzo explains how Tropical Storm Debby may impact New Jersey
At this time, Debby is likely to stay suppressed to our south thanks to a weather front that crosses New Jersey on Wednesday. This front keeps a lot of the tropical energy over the deep South and Southeast Coast through the workweek. However, this front also begins to absorb some of the moisture, shipping downpours to the north.
Some of these tropical downpours may reach southern New Jersey by Thursday night. The rest of the state can see the downpours move through on Friday with the worst of them being Friday overnight and Saturday.
The storm itself eventually weakens and gets fully absorbed by the front and jet stream before it ships out to the North Atlantic by early next week. This scenario is the most likely outcome. The other option would be a later arrival for the rain, Saturday - Monday. This scenario would only be the case if the storm continues to remain stalled farther south, and if the passing front moves farther than expected.
