Winter storm warnings continue for 20 of the 21 counties in New Jersey through Monday morning.
Snow will begin to taper as drier air filters in from Pennsylvania. This "dry slot" will eventually turn off the atmospheric spickets, but as our storm slowly pulls away from the New Jersey coast it will start to draw in a ridiculously cold arctic air mass that will stay with us for a week at least.
Neighborhoods have collected anywhere from 6 inches at the shore to well over a foot and counting in northern neighborhoods.
Snow fall rates were 1 inch to 2 inches and hour for most of the day with winds from 15 to 25 mph. The snow was falling sideways and accumulating fast. The wind will allow the snow to pile up into drifts which will turn into icebergs when the temps drop later tonight.
A wintry mix is now taking over. This will create a more slippery conditions to an already hazardous road conditions. The primary storm is now in the process of transferring its energy to a coastal storm. This will infuse more of that ocean air into the storm and sleet, and rain will be a bigger issue heading thru the overnight.
As the storm deepens and moves away from New Jersey after midnight temperatures will begin to drop. In northern New Jersey there isn't a drop. Actually, temps will warm a bit into the low 20s. At the coast and in southern zones the temperatures will crash and will lead to very icy conditions. Please be extra careful and allow extra time if you do have to head out in the morning.
What has accumulated on the roadways will freeze over as the storm pulls away and temperatures take a dive at the start of the week.
