A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH has been issued for all New Jersey counties until 9 p.m. tonight.
LIVE UPDATES: News 12 weather blog
Storms could become severe at any time this evening, with hail and damaging winds. The primary threat will be water-loaded, damaging wind bursts over 60 mph. Lots of lightning is also expected. The pace of these storms is very slow, so torrential downpours will lead to localized flooding.
FORECAST:
The atmosphere is a powder keg waiting for the fuse to be lit. Temperatures rise into the mid-90s and a cold front crosses the region. Water-loaded damaging bursts of wind will be the primary threat.
The storms are moving fairly slowly, so flooding will also be a concern. Each storm contains an amazing amount of lightning and some of the more impressive storms that are towering over 45,000 feet will have decent hailstones.
The weather will be disruptive for drivers here in New Jersey. Roadways could easily see water quickly collect from the curb to the center of the road. Please give yourself extra space and allow for extra time to get where you are going.
The storms will be around until 10 p.m. After the weather system passes, we don't expect the air to feel improved or refreshed. The air will be stagnant and steamy and will continue into tomorrow.
The overall pattern is summerlike. It's very warm. It is very humid. Isolated storms can develop quickly during the coming days. Don't cancel plans or be discouraged by the forecast. It's just summer doing its summer thing, meteorologically speaking.
