SET-UP: Fair weather is slowly retreating into New England. A developing storm is creeping up the East Coast. The wind flow around these two meteorological parameters is from the east, onshore. This onshore wind will continue for days and get gustier through the weekend. This will push an enormous amount of ocean water back at the coast and into the back bays.
COASTAL FLOODING: Tides will be running between 2 to 4 ft above normal. Sunday's high tide could approach major flood stage. Know when the times of high tide are where you live so you can be more prepared for the rising inundation.
WIND: As the pressure gradient tightens, the wind speeds will pick up. Right along the coast, from Saturday night through early Monday morning, wind gusts will be consistent from 35 to 55 mph. This is going to be a good gale. Start preparing now and gather up loose items around your property. This weekend is not the weekend to put up Halloween decorations. If they are already up, you should secure them more or take them down altogether.
WAVES: Really large and unruly swells will be battering the coast beginning on Saturday night and continuing through early Monday morning. Right in the surf zone, waves from 8 to 13 ft will be crashing on shore and carrying away whopping amounts of sand. This storm is going to rearrange the Jersey shoreline.
RAINFALL: Varies town to town. Again, I think the shore is likely going to see between 2 to 3 inches on top of the coastal flooding. Some roads may be impassable on Sunday. Elsewhere in the state, maybe up to an inch is possible. Rainfall is a good thing since we desperately need it.
The storm begins to pull away on Monday. There is still an opportunity for a few leftover showers to linger, but the intensity lets up dramatically. The winds will still be quite strong, and the threat of branches coming down and debris causing outages and property damage continues through mid-afternoon.
