Police say a storeowner was fatally shot just after 2 p.m. Wednesday in Irvington.
Investigators say 31-year-old Dwight Cousar was shot multiple times inside his store, The Corner Store, on Augusta Street and May Street. According to police, Cousar ran outside the store after the shooting and collapsed in the street across from the Augusta Preschool Academy.
School officials say some of the students were outside when the shooting occurred. The school?s superintendent says teachers and parents did their best to distract the students and get them to safety. The school was briefly locked down after the incident.
School officials say extra security and grief counselors will be on hand Thursday for students and teachers.
Police say the store, which opened two months ago, was robbed about two hours before the owner was killed. They will not comment on whether the robbery and shooting are connected. Police are now searching for the shooter.
