Pulling over on the side of the Turnpike is getting more dangerous due to speeding drivers, police say.
?People don?t respect the lights, and if you think they do, you?ve got another thing coming,? said Nick Puleio, of Puleio?s Towing. The flashing lights of police cars or tow trucks are meant to warn other drivers to slow down. However, News 12 New Jersey found out while riding along with Puleio, drivers seem to fly by vehicles on the side of the road.
Puleio says he lost one of his employees on the job last year. According to Puleio, his worker was helping a car on the side of the Turnpike near exit 10 when a driver nodded off at the wheel and hit him.
State police have been affected by drivers not slowing down. Captain Al Della Fave said, ?Troopers really fear the motor vehicle more than they fear the gun.? State police say out of 64 line-of-duty deaths since the start of the force, 49 were traffic-related.
Some lawmakers say the deaths could help the passage of a new traffic measure. The proposed legislation would create fines for drivers who don?t slow down when cars are pulled over.
While some drivers say the proposed law is a great idea, others say it may not work.
