A growing movement in New Jersey is calling for the state's most-inexperienced drivers to use marked vehicles.
A state commission on teenager driving recommends placing stickers on vehicles driven by 17-year-olds with provisional licenses. Studies show 12 percent of the state's car accidents involve drivers 17 and under.
Monmouth County Sheriff Kim Guadagno is among the supporters of the sticker proposal. The sheriff believes using decals would remind drivers of their youth and boost safety on the roads.
"They're reminded that they're a young driver and has special responsibilities," says Guadagno.
The stickers would alert fellow drivers and police officers to the presence of young drivers, but some feel it could lead to police targeting them for road violation prosecution.
Teenagers using provisional licenses already face conditions to get on the road. Teen drivers are currently prohibited from getting behind the wheel between midnight and 5 a.m. They are also only allowed one underage passenger who is not a family member.
