The mother who was critically injured in a
fatal fire last week In
Elizabeth, that also took the lives of her two young daughters and two others, has
passed away from her injuries, according to Elizabeth spokeswoman Kelly Martins.
Martins says Merlyn Vasquez,
36, died Thursday. She was taken to a hospital
on Oct. 5 following the fire
that broke out in a commercial building on the 800 block of Elizabeth Avenue.
Two of Vasquez’s daughters, identified as Daniela
Marquez, 8, and her sister, Paola, 10, died in the second-floor furniture store
after a fire erupted below. Their friend, Elizabeth Correas, 11, also died. Another
woman, Candida Martinez-Del Reyes, was also found dead.
Elizabeth Mayor Christian
Bollwage says the victims were inside the store shopping when it is believed
that a fire sparked inside a soda machine. The mayor says that employees tried
to put it out with a fire extinguisher. When that didn't work, they called the
fire department.
The victims tried to flee
but were impeded by a metal cage that blocked their escape through a back door,
officials said. Bollwage says that at one point there may have been a fire
escape at the back of the building, but it was unclear when it was removed.
