(06/12/07) SOUTH ORANGE ? Teachers at South Orange Middle School held classes outdoors Tuesday as school officials investigate possible mold-related problems inside the school building.
Teachers, parents and students gathered outside the school Tuesday morning to express their discontent with the situation. One student said he hasn?t been to school in three months because of a cough, possibly brought on by allergies to mold.
Those who work at the school said they must contend with water-stained ceilings and dirty floors.
?The conditions are deplorable,? teacher Joanna Wright said. ?It?s almost like a war zone inside.?
Wright also claims the level of contamination inside the building is 40 times above normal levels.
Parents dropping off their children criticized the school for not making them aware of the situation sooner.
Principal Kirk Smith said the matter is being investigated and, if necessary, appropriate action will be taken.
?Once we know what we?re dealing with, we?ll take corrective steps immediately with all the aggressive action that we need to take,? Smith said.
