An Essex County school district is asking families to keep their unvaccinated children home after the Thanksgiving holiday if they travel.

The South Orange/Maplewood School Distract notified parents this week that unvaccinated students who travel outside of the region (New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Connecticut) or internationally will need to quarantine for 7-10 days before returning to school. Those families were asked to fill out an online survey. Virtual learning will be available for those kids who can’t come back to class.

“I think they are doing it just right. I’m very supporting,” says Leslie Jenkins, of South Orange.

Many of the area parents and grandparents who spoke with News 12 New Jersey say that they are in favor of the rule. They say that most of their eligible family members are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Students also say they are in favor of anything that will keep them in the classroom.

“With our entire school, we’re not into virtual school again. People are adamant about that. So, whatever we can do to say in school is the biggest thing for us,” says high school senior Bella Jasper.

No one from the school district was available to be interviewed for this story. But the district website calls the guidance “per our local SOMA Department of Health as informed by the NJDOH and CDC.” The website also states that “everyone’s continued compliance is necessary to keep the members of our school community healthy and safe.”

District officials say that unvaccinated students who test negative for COVID-19 after returning can quarantine for seven days. Those who choose not to get tested must quarantine for 10 days.
