A Texas man faces driving under the influence and weapons charges after his car slammed into a tractor-trailer on Route 130 Wednesday afternoon, prompting a two-hour ramp closure for a hazmat cleanup.
South Brunswick police officers responded at approximately 3 p.m. to the northbound exit ramp from Route 130 to Ridge Road following reports of a two-vehicle collision.
Upon arrival, officers evaluated the driver of the car, identified as Kenneth Harada, 25, of San Antonio, Texas, and observed signs of impairment. Harada was charged with DUI at the scene before South Brunswick EMS transported him to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital for evaluation.
During a search of the vehicle, officers discovered a handgun and metal knuckles.
In addition to the DUI charge, police charged Harada with unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of prohibited weapons. Following his medical evaluation, he was lodged in the Middlesex County Correctional Center pending his first court appearance.
The crash resulted in a vehicle fluid spill that required responses from the Monmouth Junction Fire Department and Middlesex County Hazmat. Emergency crews shut down the exit ramp from Route 130 northbound to Ridge Road for two hours to contain and clear the spill before reopening the roadway.
