A boil water advisory was issued Thursday afternoon for Edison Water Utility customers following a water main break that impacted thousands of people.
Edison Mayor Sam Joshi says the 20-inch water main break, which runs from Woodbridge Avenue to Talmadge Road, impacted about 20,000 people.
The water main break was reported just after midnight. Customers were experiencing little to no water pressure.
Multiple businesses along Route 1 and Route 27 are impacted. Business owners tell News 12 New Jersey that it is especially difficult to lose out on business on the day after Christmas, when many people are off from work and school.
Officials say crews are working to isolate the main break. While conditions have improved in the afternoon, Joshi says there is still a lot of work to do. He says there's no estimate at this time for when the water will be back, but there are still hours of work to go. He is hopeful it will be done by Thursday night, but there is no guarantee that it will come to fruition.
Joshi spoke about the impact of aging infrastructure on the water main break, saying money is being invested to improve the situation.
This break comes just days after there was another water main break in Edison on Route 27, about 3.5 miles away.
