A downtown construction project in the middle of summer at the Jersey Shore has left some business owners tallying up their losses in recent weeks.
We’re on Main Street, which is the way into town from Route 35, and you can see the disruption here.
At times, this street was closed several blocks east toward Route 71. Business owners tell me they’ve seen up to a 50% drop in foot traffic since the project began.
In a letter on social media in August, Mayor Michael Mangan said that if the town waited until later this fall, there would not be enough time for the roadwork to settle. He said that could risk delaying the county’s entire schedule, pushing roadwork and road restrictions deep into 2027 and possibly 2028.
