Business owners in Middlesex County say they are being impacted by the closure of a busy roadway that mysteriously split in half.

A large crack formed on Smith Street on Thursday. The roadway runs between Woodbridge Township and Perth Amboy. Officials say the road will be closed for the next several months for repairs.

Tom Rhodes of Racz’s Towing says that the road closure is impacting his business.

“It’s so difficult getting in and out, so our response time is a little bit off,” Rhodes says.

He says that, like many people in the area, he was caught off guard by the road’s condition.

“I had no idea what was going on. But it was such a bad outcome…I figured it would be a small crack, but that’s crazy," he said.

It was not immediately clear what caused the roadway to split in two. Some believe that it may be from a construction project that is nearby.

Homeowners say that they are concerned about the foundations of their houses.

Middlesex County officials are in charge of the road repairs.
