New Jersey Rep. Chris Smith introduced a bill Monday that is an international version of Megan?s Law.

Smith says when Megan?s Law was created, its purpose was to notify families of convicted sex offender that live nearby. However, he says the law does not cover offenders who are visiting the country.

Smith?s bill requires other countries to notify the U.S. if a convicted sex offender is traveling to the country. Other countries would face economic penalties similar to those under a human trafficking law already on the books. The bill would also require the U.S. to notify other countries if a known offender plans to travel abroad.

The parents of Megan Kanka, who the law was named after, hope this new bill will stop offenders from going to places where child prostitution is rampant. Megan?s mother feels protecting children should not stop at the borders.
