A Shirley woman was driving with only a learner's permit when she allegedly struck and killed a pedestrian walking through the crosswalk before fleeing the scene, according to the prosecutor.
Silvia Alvarez De Reyes, 46, pleaded not guilty in Southampton Town Justice Court today to one count of leaving the scene of an accident involving a fatality. The judge ordered that she be held on $25,000 cash bail due to the seriousness of the charge and that it resulted in someone's death.
Reyes' attorney from the Legal Aid Society called that amount "a punishment for a first-time offender."
Southampton police said an officer was on patrol around 7:30 p.m. Sunday when they found an unconscious man, identified as Ever Eli Damian Mazat, 46, in a crosswalk along Flanders Road between the traffic circle and Vail Avenue in Riverhead.
First responders tried to save Mazat's life, but he died on the road, according to prosecutors in court today.
People who live near the crash scene said the road is always difficult to navigate.
"Sometimes the guys drive fast and sometimes the people just walk and don't see the cars," one neighbor said.
Investigators said Reyes initially stopped after the crash but then drove off before returning with two friends hours later. That's when the police arrested the Shirley resident.
Investigators recovered her 1999 Toyota Corolla in Mastic.
Residents who live in the area said they have complained multiple times for pedestrian safety improvements in the area.
"Either the light gets moved to the crosswalk or the crosswalk gets moved to the light," Flanders resident Al Lopez said.
The case against Reyes continues on Friday at 1 p.m.
