A man is behind bars accused of attacking a rabbi on Sussex Road in Bergenfield.

Police say 40-year-old Jeffrey Zichinella stopped driving, got out of his car, and assaulted the rabbi. A witness stepped in to help.

The rabbi and the good Samaritan have minor injuries this morning.

Mayor Arvin Amatorio called the incident "a shameful act that has no place in Bergenfield" and said the town will not tolerate violence under any circumstances.

Police plan to increase patrols around homes and synagogues in the area.
