Essex County sheriff’s officers recovered an illegal handgun during a traffic stop in Newark earlier this week, authorities said.

Sheriff Amir D. Jones said officers made the arrest Tuesday during a proactive patrol near Oraton Parkway and 14th Avenue, in the area of Vailsburg Park.

Officers stopped a vehicle after observing traffic violations, including following another vehicle too closely, the sheriff’s office said. They found a .40-caliber Glock handgun and 13 rounds of .40-caliber ammunition in a factory-installed storage compartment.

The driver was arrested and charged with multiple weapons offenses, including unlawful possession of a weapon and unlawful transportation of a firearm. Police also issued several motor vehicle summonses.

The person, who was not identified by police in a news release, was taken to the Essex County Correctional Facility pending court proceedings.
