(04/16/08) NEWARK - Former Newark Mayor Sharpe James isn't talking after a jury convicted him and an ex-mistress of all charges at their federal corruption trial.
Neither James nor Tamika Riley showed any emotion as the jury foreman spoke the word "guilty" 22 times.
The jury deliberated for about 30 hours over six days.
James kissed his wife as they left the courthouse together.
Prosecutors said James abused his office and betrayed his constituents by arranging for the sale of nine city-owned properties for $46,000 to Riley. Prosecutors said Riley quickly sold them for $665,000.
The charges carry about seven to eight years in prison for each defendant.
James and Riley remain free on bail until sentencing on July 29.
James still faces another trial on charges he used city-issued credit cards to pay for $58,000 worth of personal expenses while he was mayor.Click here for reaction to the Sharpe James verdict.James case in hands of jury Newark officials testify in ex-mayor's corruption trial Ex-Newark mayor's aide takes stand at corruption trial
