Community officials, family and friends came together Saturday to honor fallen Newark Police Sgt. Joseph Azcona.
The corner of Carteret Street and Broadway was renamed to Sergeant Joseph A. Azcona Way.
Azcona was killed in the line of duty in March while investigating an illegal weapons possession at the same intersection.
Officials say Azcona's legacy and memory will live on in the city.
"Here is the thing about a life like his: it doesn't end. He will live on in the stories we tell, in the sacrifices we make, and now on this street, where now this is a reminder of his love and commitment to all of us. He didn't just wear this badge, he carried the weight of our hopes and dreams and our struggles," says Essex County Sheriff Amir Jones.
Sunday would have been Azcona's 27 birthday.
