Seton Hall University was on lockdown for much of Monday night while police investigated reports of a campus shooting.
According to police, a friend of a Seton Hall University student was hospitalized after being found on the school's South Orange campus with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Essex County prosecutor's spokesman Paul Loriquet identified the man involved as 22-year-old Anthony Papalia. He said Papalia is believed to have been visiting a female student at the university.
Loriquet said preliminary reports indicate the man was inside a vehicle near the Xavier Hall dormitory when he shot himself in the stomach.
The man was transported to University Hospital and was reported in fair condition.
All entrances to the South Orange campus were closed as a result of the police probe.
Dormitory residents said they received text messages to stay in their rooms for safety. All dormitory residents were locked in their buildings during the police probe.
