Members of the Service Employees International Union marched Monday following a mass at St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church.
The union represents thousands of New Jersey employees who work as custodians, security guards, school cafeteria staff and various other property maintenance jobs. The union has entered negotiations for 7,000 commercial workers whose contract is up soon.
"Today is the day that we celebrate workers. It's not just about backyard barbecues and beaches and bargain sales," said Kevin Brown, of Service Employees International Union. "It's also about remembering what the day is about. It's about honoring work, honoring the workers."
